When this happens, you will find that there is often a cancellation fee, and no way to get a refund for what you paid ahead of time. Many hotels only offer a “rain check” in the case of cancellations of online booking. This is still equitable, and by their argument does not actually set you back, but the problem here is again convenience. What if you never get another chance to take time off to head to that location for a vacation? Then you are out that money, unless it is a bigger, chain hotel with locations in many areas of the world. Then, it is possible you might transfer your rain check credit to another place, at another time. But even so, beware of expiration dates. Some of the rain checks are only good for a limited amount of time following your cancellation.
