San Diego Sporting Events Highlights

San Diego is home to several teams competing in both minor and major leagues in different sporting categories. For major league baseball, the region has the Padres; for big league football, it’s the San Diego Chargers.
The city is also host to several sporting events happening throughout the year. Perhaps you are interested in participating in a triathlon or you may wish to experience the excitement at the tracks during the racing season. Whichever is the case, the following sporting events are happening in San Diego this year, inviting you to watch or even participate.
The Wells Fargo Outrigger Challenge (April 30th)
Crown Point Shores at Mission Bay will be the hub of exciting activities on the fifth Saturday of April, as it is the venue for the Outrigger Challenge and Luau. No previous paddling experience is necessary to participate. In the morning of the event, the Hanohano Outrigger Canoe club will provide instructions. Proper equipment will also be provided. Lunch will be served, and teams are guaranteed to compete in at least two races, as well as take home t-shirts commemorating the event.
Hoops at the Beach with Jack in the Box® (May 21st to 22nd)
Weekend warriors and hoops enthusiasts are all welcome for this event, happening on the courts of Crown Point, Mission Bay. Basketball enthusiasts of all ages can compete on the 3-on-3 Action; try out their shooting mettle on the Free Throw Challenge; or see who dominates in the Slam Dunk contest. It is a great sporting event that the whole family can enjoy.
Annual IronKids National Triathlon Series (May 22nd)
Children and youth ages 6 to 15 are invited to participate in the annual youth triathlon that will take place on Mission Bay Park on May 22nd. The event features a beach swim, a cycling portion, and a sprint stint. Each triathlon finisher will be awarded a commemorative medal. Trophies will also be awarded to the top three finishers for each age category.
Del Mar Racing Season (July 20th to September 7th)
Del Mar Racetrack comes alive during the third week of July, which is the start of the race season. Fans and racing enthusiasts all flock to the racetrack during this period to place their wagers on thoroughbred horses competing against each other in the annual Del Mar Thoroughbred Club races. Top jockeys, top horses, well-known trainers, big bettors, and notable figures all converge during this exciting time. Surely, you’ll want some piece of that action, too.
